TRAVEL TIPS
Welcome to Rio de Janeiro!
We’re thrilled to celebrate this special occasion with you in such an amazing city. To ensure everyone has a fantastic time, here are a few friendly tips to help you stay safe while enjoying all that Rio has to offer:
We’re sure you’ll have an incredible time experiencing Rio’s beauty and culture. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out. Have a fantastic time!
Overall Tips
- Credit Card and Payments: Credit cards are widely accepted throughout Rio. We also accept contactless payments such as Apple Pay.
- For those who prefer to carry cash, $80 to $100 USD (approximately R$400 to R$500 BRL) should be more than enough for incidental expenses.
- Tipping Culture in Rio: Tipping is customary in Rio, though it’s not mandatory. In restaurants, a 10% to 13% service charge is often included in the bill. For taxis, rounding up the fare or adding a small tip is a nice gesture. Hotel staff, such as bellhops and housekeeping, also appreciate a small tip for their services (1USD to 5USD)..
- The most common way to communicate with Brazilians is by using Whatsapp. Whether you call a restaurant to make reservations, book a surf lesson, arrange a guided tour, or make a friend, you'll likely be needing Whatsapp.
- Emergency Contacts: Keep the local emergency numbers handy: Police, dial (190) and Medical Emergencies - Ambulance / Samu dial (192).
- Healthcare and Travel Insurance: Brazil offers universal free healthcare; however, we highly recommend that you purchase your own travel insurance for additional peace of mind and coverage.
Dress Code
During fall, Rio’s temperatures typically range from 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C), so you'll want to pack accordingly.
- Casual and Comfortable: Fall in Rio is warm and pleasant, so light, breathable layers are ideal. Think casual and comfortable attire such as shorts, t-shirts, and light long-sleeve shirts. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city.
- Beachwear: Beachwear remains common during the day, especially if you plan to visit the beautiful beaches. Swimwear, flip-flops, and cover-ups are appropriate for beach outings.
- Evenings: For evenings, you might want to bring a light jacket or sweater as temperatures can drop slightly. Casual dining spots and nightlife venues are generally relaxed, but smart-casual attire is always a safe bet.
Safety
- Stay Aware of Your Surroundings and Watch for Pickpockets: Rio is bustling with activity. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas like markets or tourist spots.
- Keep Valuables Secure: Avoid wearing flashy jewelry and keep your phone and wallet in the front pockets of your clothing. Use a hotel safe for your important items, and carry only what you need for the day.
- Use Reputable Transportation: For safe and affordable transportation, we recommend using Uber Black. It’s a reliable option for getting around the city.
